Something Small and Cute
A story about small and cute creatures with eccentric personalities who live in a fun yet surprisingly deep world. Created by illustrator Nagano, Chiikawa began as a webcomic on Twitter in 2020 and has grown into a manga, anime series, and full-blown cultural phenomenon.
Webcomic Origins
Started on Twitter in January 2020 and quickly gained over 1.1 million followers. The comics were later collected into manga volumes by publisher Kodansha.
Anime Adaptation
Studio Doga Kobo brought Chiikawa to life in April 2022, airing on Fuji TV's Mezamashi TV morning show. The series has aired well over 300 episodes.
Global Popularity
With over 3.6 million copies sold and collaborations with Sanrio, sports teams, theme parks, and railway companies, Chiikawa has become a worldwide kawaii icon.
A Cute World with Hidden Depth
Don't let the round eyes and soft colors fool you — Chiikawa's world is more complex than it appears. The small creatures work jobs like weeding and monster hunting, assigned by mysterious armored beings called Yoroi-san. They take certification exams to earn better pay, navigate housing inequality, and face real dangers from roaming monsters.
At its heart, though, the series is about friendship, perseverance, and finding joy in small moments, like sharing food, winning a raffle, or simply being together. It's this blend of cozy warmth and unexpected depth that makes Chiikawa so beloved.
